Christian Education
St. Matthew's offers many opportunities for adult Christian education. Study programs for learning and reflection take place in spring and fall, with courses offered on Monday evenings and Tuesday morning. Chapel Chats take place on the 4th Sunday at 11.30 am from September through June. Click here for a list of programs.
All events are advertised in The Pulse of the Parish, our monthly newsletter, and also announced at Sunday services.
Servers
Servers include people of all ages who assist in worship at regular Sunday services and special festivals. Training is provided. New servers are always welcome, especially teenagers. Contact The Rev. Canon Pat Johnston at 613-234-4024.
Altar Guild
This hard working group of women and men prepares the church sanctuary each Saturday morning for Sunday worship services and special festivals as well as weddings and funerals. Responsibilities include flower arrangements. Members work on a rotation basis. Volunteers are welcome. Contact the church office.
Healing Team
A team of lay persons serves as a channel of God's healing power, offering special prayers for healing for petitioners who come to the Chapel during the 10 a.m. Eucharist. These prayers, said in confidence, are usually asked for a relative, a friend or for one's own individual needs.
Prayer Ministry
A group of parishioners prays daily for those who have asked for a prayer for themselves or for others. Prayer-chain requests may be made by using the wooden boxes in the church.
Coffee and Cookies
Volunteers serve coffee and cookies after the 10 a.m. service. It's a time for informal fellowship among parishioners. Lemonade is served during summer months.
Parish Fellowship Events
Parishioners work together on projects and events throughout the year, such as spring and fall clean-up, palm cross-making, church decoration for festivals and the church's participation in the Great Glebe Garage Sale.
The Community Committee offers frequent opportunities for food and fellowship over lunch or supper: Pancake Supper, Maundy Thursday meal, the parish picnic in June, the St. Matthew's Day lunch in September, and the Stewardship Dinner in October. The children help with the St. Nicholas Party in December.
The Marmalade Group
For two weeks in January, volunteers make marmalade and have lots of fun. This annual fundraiser is hugely successful, supporting Outreach projects internationally and locally.
Pastoral Care
The Pastoral Care Team works under the supervision of the Rector. People on the Team visit members of the congregation who are no longer able to attend church on a regular basis. All members of the Team have taken part in the ecumenical Ottawa Pastoral Care Training Program, supported by the Christian Council of the Capital Area. If you are interested in knowing more about this ministry, please speak to Canon Pat.
Prayer Shawl Ministry
Members of St. Matthew's Prayer Shawl Ministry knit and crochet shawls for those who are hospitalized or infirm. The purpose is to provide care, prayers and shawls to parishioners who are sick with long-term illness and whose family members are concerned about complete recovery to health. For further information contact Anne Goodwin at 613.821.0205 or email her at ea_goodwin@hotmail.com .
Please note that for the year 2010 - 2011, Prayer Shawl Ministry members are knitting in their own time. When prayer shawls are completed, they are to be delivered to the church office. Recipients of the prayer shawls are determined by the Pastoral Care Committee and clergy. If you know of someone needing a prayer shawl, please get in touch with Canon Pat.
